Abstract
In recent years, besides the use of energy, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have been also considered because of global awareness on climate change and regulatory frameworks. Policy makers have realized the importance of considering CO2 emissions in creating national energy and economic roadmaps. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to comprise Turkey’s CO2 performance with OECD and BRICS countries by data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist productivity index (MPI). Using the index, the emission performance of the countries from 2009 to 2013 is studied. While the inputs are electricity capacity, energy supply, energy consumption, energy production, electricity consumption, forest area, labor and capital, the only output is CO2 emissions per kWh of electricity. The results obtained show that the most efficient country is Luxembourg and also developments of the chosen 27 countries including Turkey remain limited in terms of total factor productivity. This study validates that many countries are required to review their politics and applications in terms of environmental efficiency.
